10 Colleges and Universities with $0 Tuition + 10 Steps on How to Get a Scholarship

10 Colleges and Universities with $0 Tuition

Attending a college or university doesn't have to be expensive. There are a number of schools--both online and traditional institutions--that offer free tuition or low-cost learning options. Here is a list of 10 colleges and universities that fall into one of these two categories.

1.   Berea College
Every student who attends Kentucky's Berea College receives a full-tuition scholarship worth more than $25,000. Berea also helps students with other costs, such as food, room and board, by providing a work study program. Students also receive a free laptop to use while they are in school. Berea offers the opportunity to major in many different subjects. The most popular majors are business, manufacturing, family studies and human development.

2. Alice Lloyd College

US News and World Report ranks Alice Lloyd College among the best U.S. colleges to graduate with the least amount of debt. This Kentucky school offers guaranteed tuition to any student in the college's 108-county Central Appalachian service area. Students work 10-20 hours each week to pay their way. Alice Lloyd offers degrees in a wide range of fields as well as pre-professional programs.

3 Webb Institute

The Princeton Review ranks Webb Institute among the Best Value Colleges in America. The school is known for providing a top-notch engineering education along with full-tuition scholarships to anyone who attends. Students live in a mansion while they attend school and participate in paid internships for extra cash.

4 College of the Ozarks

Located in Missouri, the College of the Ozarks is a conservative Christian school that cheerfully discourages student debt. The school has been nicknamed 'Hardwork U' because students work 15 hours each week to graduate tuition-free. The College of the Ozarks favors applicants who are financially needy. Popular majors include business, teaching, education and criminal justice.

5. Curtis Institute of Music

The Curtis Institute of Music offers full-tuition scholarships to everyone who gains admission. The school is very particular when it comes to applicants, accepting only 160 new students each year. Those who do get in can expect to receive an excellent education from one of the best music conservatories in the world.

6. CUNY Teacher Academy

The City University of New York offers full-tuition scholarships to students who enroll in their Teacher Academy. Every student who enrolls is eligible. Students also receive a full-time teaching position in a New York school upon graduation.

7. U.S. Academies

Students who attend any of these U.S. academies receive a full ride. They also receive a monthly stipend in return for service. Although each program is different, most require applicants to obtain a congressional nomination from their state congressional delegation. Applicants must also pass a physical fitness test and meet other requirements.

8.State of Washington Universities

Both the University of Washington and Washington State University offer need-based programs that pay full-tuition and fees. The programs are available to in-state residents who meet State Need Grant or Pell Grant requirements. Special scholarships are also available to out-of-state students who need help covering the cost of tuition.

9. Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering

At one point, the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering offered a full-tuition scholarship to anyone who attends. The school has since reduced the scholarship policy by 50 percent. Even so, Franklin W. Olin College still offers one of the largest merit scholarship programs in the country to all admitted students.

10. University of the People

The University of the People is the world's first tuition-free, non-profit online university. Students who enroll are not required to pay any tuition. Study materials are also free. However, there are modest fees ($10 to $100) for taking tests at the end of each course. Fees work on a sliding scale depending on the country where you live. The University of the People does not confer degrees yet for either of their programs (business administration or computer science.) But the school is in the process of applying for accreditation, which means that they may be offering degrees very soon.

10 Steps on How to Get a Scholarship

  1. Step 1
Start looking for scholarships at least one year before entering college.
  1. Step 2

  1. Step 3
Think about applying for a fellowship - a scholarship for graduate students - if you want to go to graduate school.
  1. Step 4
Recognize what you can expect from a scholarship when you apply for it. Some schools offer to pay all your expenses, while others only pay for room and board.
  1. Step 5
Use a No. 2 pencil to complete the application form.

  1. Step 8
Supply information about the talent required by the scholarship for which you are applying.
  1. Step 9
Mail all the paperwork to the address listed on the application.
  1. Step 10

Preface

L
ife is in phases and men are in sizes.  Our understanding of the phases of our lives ultimately determines our size in life.  Life is full of many questions and until we tactically and wisely answers those questions, our lives remain a question mark.

A research was carried out on the graduating class of YALE University many years ago.  The result of the survey had it that only 3 percent of them had actually sat down and carefully laid out a detailed plan for their lives after graduation.  They had goals on where they want to go and wrote plans on what they are going to achieve year by year.  On the other hand, 10 percent of the graduating class were found out to have an idea of what they want to become but had not made detailed plans.  Unfortunately, the remaining 87 percent were not sure of what to do with their lives after graduation.  However, 25 years later, that’s in 1973, those 3 percent who wrote out detailed plan had 5-10 percent achievement than the 10 percent who only had an idea but refused to make a detailed plan.

Till date the statistics stills stands: Only 3 percent of human beings sit down to write out detailed plans for their lives.  The majority live their lives on he controversial and the most unrealistic subject of luck and fate.  Pathetic! Hence, a need for us, particularly the young people, to know how to set goals and a workable detailed plan, for whatever purpose.

Goals and Purpose
A goalless life is like a goalless football match that is full of struggles but yielded no fruit. Goal setting is as indispensable as a healthy respiration to a man’s life.  Where there are no goals, people live in self-inflicted blindness, confusion, division and instability. Hence, a goal can be described as the target end result of a process.  For instance, the target end result for Builders’ Submit 2010 is to help the youths to begin talk and work as a nation builder, because a nation builder is a natural leader.

However, it should be noted that without a clear sense of purpose, goal setting is, in a way, useless.  It is the revelation of divine purpose that gives birth to lofty goals and ambitions.  I hereby encourage young people to seek God to help them discover their assignment and purpose on earth as this is an imperative prerequisite for living a life of fulfillment and everlasting joy.

Making SMART Goals
Setting goals is no child’s play.  It’s not to be imagined.  It must be purposefully, thoughtfully and prayerfully set, with the mind-set of positivism and resolute persistence.

Your goals should be SMART;

ü  Specific – Be precise and concise. Definitiveness of purpose will assist at setting specific goals.  Example – “I want to become a Scientist.”
ü  Measurable – Drive your goals to the closest niche as possible.  Example: “I want to become a Botanical Scientist”.
ü  Achievable – Ceteris Paribus, anything is possible and achievable to anyone who dares to believe in the omnipotence of God and the potency of his own ingenuity and intelligence.  Example – “I want to become a globally recognized Botanical Scientist”.
ü  Realistic – How real and true are your goals? Lofty goals without corresponding, and reasonable facts and statistical figures is unrealistic. Hence, making its achievement doubtable.
ü  Timely – We should learn to set goals that are timely and time-bound to avoid procrastination and delay. Set a deadline. Fix it day, time, month or years. Example – “I want to become a globally recognized Botanical Scientist in 10 years time.”

Achieving your goals through a Workable Plan
You can plan your way through your course. It will help you see the end from the beginning.  In fact, through careful planning, you can foresee the challenges on the way to getting your goals and strategize a way of escape.

Write Down Your Goals
“Write the vision and make it plain upon a tablet; that he may run that readeth it.” Habakkuk 2 vs. 2.   People work best with a clear written blue print.
          In your planning process, answer these 8 questions;
ü                                    What exactly do I want?
ü                                    Who do I need to help me?
ü                                    Where exactly do I want it?
ü                                    By when do I want it done?
ü                                    Who are the beneficiaries?
ü                                    How much will it cost me?
ü                                    How do I raise the money need to achieve this goal?
ü                                    What aim I willing to give in return for this goal?

21 Life Questions to Answer at Your Youth
1.            Who Am I?
2.            What do I want in life?
3.            What certificate do I want?
4.            When do I need to get all these certificates?
5.            Who are my mentors?
6.            Who is my role model?
7.            Who must I celebrate and honour regularly?
8.            Whom am I sent to?
9.            To whom am I accountable?
10.         Who should I marry?
11.         When do I want to get married?
12.         How many children do I want?
13.         What are my life values, policies, and philosophies?
14.         Who is my friend / colleagues?
15.         When will I retire from jobs?
16.         What are my Rest Management Techniques?
17.         What kind of job do I want?
18.         What kind of Business do I invest in?
19.         What are my daily routines?
20.         What are my 5-year Goals?
21.         What are my 10-year Goals?

In conclusion, after making a blue print of your goals and plans, place and read it to yourself every blessed day.
If you endeavour to prayerfully and thoughtfully answer these questions, your life will be set on a straight and smooth path to success and fulfillment.  Even though challenges are unavoidable, they’ll be minimal and easily surmountable.

You will get there!

INTRODUCTION

“Where there is no Vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.”(Proverbs 29:18)

I sincerely welcome you all to this epoch event. It is a day marked remarkably to display God’s accomplishment of purpose. You are highly honored for being part of this day. “He that watches greatness passed is great.”(Williams Shakespeare) and this is why I say you are all great people.
We are celebrating someone who through the unyielding firmness of his character, the power of his personal example, the sheer force of his Moral and Spiritual Leadership, the translucent light of his counsel and wisdom, and his over-flowing love for humanity especially the youth has touched all of us, in and out of this room, so profoundly.
I feel privilege this day to converse with you on the topic “The Role of Creative Thinking on Youth Development and the Socio-Economic Transformation in Africa.” As we celebrate someone with rock-solid character like granite, it bears a connection to the canon that Creative Thinking is viewed by world scintillating professionals as the most proffered antidote to the transformation of any nation’s human and natural resources.
Finally, because we stand at the dawn of a new era, there is no better reason for invoking the urgent need for the development and socio-economic status of the African Continent. Let us then without mincing words begin by talking about Creative Thinking as the foundation to Transformation.
WHAT IS CREATIVE THINKING?
Looking at situations from a fresh perspective that suggests unorthodox solutions (which may look unsettling at first). Creative Thinking can be stimulated by a free-wheeling process such as the method of solving problems with diverse suggestion(Brainstorming) and by a step by step process such as ways of solving problems with initial irrelevant ideas(Lateral thinking).
Creative Thinking therefore is a Divine Wisdom. The ability to make alive an intelligent extraordinary unthinkable inborn idea. It is a way of life of an individual.
Creativity has been linked to the activities in the human “LEFT BRAIN” which is responsible for the most component of human characters as language sounds, emotional memory, vision and reading, body sense, phonics and spellings, symbolic relationship, creative ideas inhibition, including worry etc.  Whether you are trying to solve problems or not, creative thinking is crucial. The process boils down to changing perspective and seeing things differently than you currently do.
Recent research confirmed that Brainstorming and Lateral thinking: agent of creative thinking has largely increased the advent of both Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations concerned with Youth Development. These organizations are responsible for the defense of the creative wealth of the youth in the society. However, unfortunately, another recent report by the White House Task Force for Disadvantaged youth (2003), says the amount of high quality outcomes of youth programs is limited. Still, some valuable information about the impact of youth development can be gleaned from existing report.
Youth development is a process which prepares young people to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood through a coordinated, progressive series of activities and experiences which help them to becoming socially, morally, emotionally, physically, and cognitively competent. These competencies encompass a wide range of areas such as increased academic achievement, greater communication skills, increased safety at home and school, fewer psychosocial problems as loneliness, shyness and hopelessness.
Youth development as increasingly been identified as an important component of social reform: the means that generates social development.
Functionally, youths are geared to adapt old knowledge to new uses, produce new knowledge, and apply it to one or more fields of human life. Therefore, though, youth development is the outcome of socio-economic transformation, it also highly affects social development. Other factors that are relevant in the development are youth/ adult partnerships, youth voice, youth leadership and civil engagement. A positive creative thinking youth development is the idea that all young people need support, guidance and opportunities during adolescence, engaging them to contribute to the well-being of the large community. In order to augment the development of youth, a well designed and planned community programs are to be in place. Such that will concentrate on the positive social norms, opportunity to belong, appropriate structure, physical and psychological safety.
While development is facilitated and influenced by technological changes such as modern information, and communications technology, the social group which is highly influenced, (i.e. the population that is very vulnerable under its pressure, is the youth, not only in Africa, but in many other developing countries.
Socio-Economic Transformation is not a new process. For over five decades, firms in the economically advanced countries have increasingly extended their outreach through trade and production activities through colonialism.
Considering the socio-economic transformation in South Africa, the Black race now measure up in every standard. Looking at the Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs), South Africa have been recognized as central for economic growth and transformation since the mid 1990s and have developed under an economic framework influenced by the State’s transformation strategies, particularly Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerments (BBBEEs). While acknowledging the limitation at hand, the overall conclusion is that positive interaction between the SMMEs and BBBEEs frameworks can contribute to the empowerment of more disadvantaged South Africans and therefore to meaningful Socio-Economic Transformation.
Socio-Economic Transformation is not a finite goal, but a long and complicated process that requires adequate policies and institutions, and an action role from both government and private sector. It requires clear targets, guidelines and beneficiaries. Although the transformation framework has moved forward in this direction where targets and guidelines are now much clearer, the South African government still needs to workout ways in which the benefits will reach not just those who have been historically disadvantaged, but also and particularly those who are now marginalized. Notwithstanding the importance of business in general, and that the larger Small Medium and Micro Enterprise contributes greatly to employment creation and economic growth, it seems that Socio-Economic Transformation is more likely to be achieved if strategies to support the smallest  initiatives are strengthened.
ROLE OF CREATIVE THINKING AND ITS IMPACT ON TRANSFORMATION
Creative Thinking as played Positive Roles in youth development as it settles some nagging issues dealing with emotions, academics, mental and spiritual development.
·         Emotionally- creative thinking has helped the youth in bringing out their realities ideas and expressing their brio to the forefront for positive change.
·         Academically- it has created a positive learning where youths are charged differently contributing to the development of the society, through sensible creativity, logical reasoning based on personal knowledge and rational problems solving skills.
·         Mentally- creative thinking as a mental catalyst has facilitated making right choices and influencing policies reaching the youths where they are.
·         Spiritually- David was a man who through his creative thinking defeated the giant Goliath with a sling and a stone. This creativity is still functional today as the youths of this age are daring towards the unthinkable to do exploit for God.
Apart from such roles played, the youth have also impacted greatly on the Socio-Economic Transformation in Africa. The constant and increasing cultural change among the youths has contributed to the challenges in various economic forms. In contrast to this, the youth themselves have geared towards reviving the socio-economic transformation. They have achieved this by:
·         Trying to find the ‘Right Answer’ to every situation- not just an answer, but the right one to solve the immediate problems of unemployment, criminal activities and other illicit acts in the society.
·         Following the lay down ‘Rules’-those rules that guide the conduct of behavioral attitude among the youths in the society.
·         Avoiding ‘Ambiguity’-they have learnt to take more risk and tackle the first issues first.
·         Be ‘Serious Minded’-they have shown more maturity in their dealing as it makes them more serious in their activities.
·         Think ‘logically’-their logical thinking now transform the society making it a haven of peace.
This has strengthened the economic transformation as more knowledgeable serious minded youths are now contributing to the growth and transformation of Africa’s economy.
CONCLUSION
The possibility of future peace and stability for all of Africa’s population are contained within the matrices of the current instability surrounding Africa. This argument does not necessarily mean that Africa is automatically progressing towards a stable, free and positive change, but these conditions will provide the potential for the profound human development. Therefore, these calls for the immediate intervention of all Africans to recognize the opportunities provided by the current socio-economic flux and relative openness in Africa, and support positive outcomes for the socio-economic transition. The basic facts are that while we have achieved some of our goals, there are many more, which are ending up in the dustbin of history. Our unshakeable faith and devotion have always been a source of consolidation despite the vicissitudes of life. As an incurable believer, I have no doubt that our youth now have more confidence in achieving every set goal.
In conclusion, let me say that the youths in this part of the world have suffered injuries. I believe that the solutions lie in our hands if we can work in good faith and humanity to create a developed and transformed society which will be the pride of future generations.
Our situation is far from hopeless no matter what the doubting Thomas’s say. However, wise thinking will transform us (the youth) from the pit of decay to a society that has reconciled with the demons of the past and on the part to ensuring a future of common prosperity and socio-economic transformation into the rest of Africa. This is what great leaders do in altering the destiny of their society. The change is in you!
